Reading University, UK: Part-time Sensory Panellist (Denture Panel)

Do you wear dentures? Working part-time as a Sensory Panellist allows you to learn a new skill in a unique role to help bring products specialised for denture wearers to life and the hours can also be fitted around an existing job role.

MMR Research Worldwide specialise in consumer and sensory market research in the food, drink, personal and household care sectors.

We are currently looking for articulate and collaborative people who wear full top plate dentures (no indent) to join an exciting new sensory team based at our Sensory Science Centre at Reading University. Using the new skills that you’ll learn, you will be required to evaluate denture adhesives, cleansers and specialist toothpastes, paid at an hourly rate of £8.20 per hour.

No prior knowledge is required as full training will be given.

Unfortunately, if you have any food intolerances or allergies, mouth piercings, chronic oral conditions or have any medical conditions which require regular medication, this position will not be suitable for you as panellists are required to test a varying range of products.

This is a part-time role for a fixed-term contract of 12 months. The first 12 weeks will be a training period and will require you to work 2.5 hours per day, 3 days per week in Reading within a large group. These hours could take place within or outside of working hours depending on your availability and the times and days would be fixed for the duration of the training period and be agreed before the commencement of the role.

Following the training period, your core hours will be an hour and a half on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and you will be required to spend a proportion of this time at Reading University (between 7.30am and 9am as agreed with your manager – on most days it is likely to be c. 45 minutes), and the rest of the evaluation will be completed in your own home and / or your working environment.

Parking permits for parking on the campus of the Reading University will be provided as part of the package for both the training period and core working hours.

We are looking for a motivated and confident individual to work as a Sensory Panel Manager based at a client’s sensory facility in Brentford, London.

This is an exciting role where the Sensory Panel Manager will have prime responsibility for training and managing two of MMR’s dedicated descriptive panels as well as leading this client’s sensory projects through completion; from initial briefing to raw data provision and ensuring that the research design, panel session planning and leadership, sensory moderation, panel performance analysis and monitoring fulfil our clients’ needs and fit their KPIs. You will work collaboratively with the HR team to regularly recruit and train new panellists to ensure that panel numbers are at the required level. This role also requires working closely with the client’s internal sensory scientists therefore accomplished client management skills are essential.

Essential skills:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent (ideally in a related field)
  • Sensory expertise – sound knowledge and experience of a wide range of sensory analysis methods applied to food, drink, personal and or pharmaceutical categories, and descriptive panel leadership and supervisory role in sensory team
  • Sensory moderation - efficiently handling, without leading or biasing, of panel consensus and agreement, and effectively addressing disagreement of attribute definitions, product scores, panelist fatigue
  • Quantitative Descriptive Analysis experience
  • Leadership, team building and motivational skills

  • Ability to work independently & manage own workload

  • High level of IT competency (understanding of Compusense would be beneficial)

On the job training will be provided along with external training. MMR Research Worldwide specialise in consumer and sensory market research. We currently have an expert panel of Sensory Panellists based at Reading University and are looking for potential panellists for future vacancies, paid at an hourly rate of £8.20.

Sensory Panellists work both individually and within a team to evaluate products within the food, drink and personal care industry therefore candidates should have good sensory acuity (this will be tested at a screening session), and have the ability to articulate themselves in front of others. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided.

Products evaluated will be varied ranging from food (including seafood and individual food ingredients) and drink (including alcohol & caffeinated drinks) through to personal care products such as shampoo, deodorant, washing powder and skin care products.

We are currently recruiting for potential panellists for future vacancies on the panel. Your core working pattern will be 2 hours per day, Monday to Wednesday, 9.30am to 11.30am although flexibility to work additional hours on those days (and on a Thursday) is required as necessary. Flexibility for home-working where products are evaluated individually in your own home is required.
